Escape to Taos
Pairing wellness and writing in the mountains of Taos could be just what you need. It’s your chance to recharge your body through walks, meditation and yoga in addition to pursuing your writing goals. Bring along your writing projects, whether scholarly or personal, or simply bring a desire to write.
You’ll have time for meditation, and writing and writing discussions throughout your stay.
Taos is a mountain town at 9,000 feet. Summer weather is variable, often cool in the morning, hot in the afternoon, cool at night. Thunderstorms cruise in abruptly. Be prepared for hot, cold, wet, dry - sometimes all in the same day.
Retreat overviewCheck in is after 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 6. The evening includes dinner and an orientation session. Wellness and writing will be woven into each part of the day.
- Each morning from nine to noon, participants meet in the Luhan House classroom to write and to discuss various aspects of writing.
- Afternoons will be free for scheduled one-on-one writing or wellness consultations with faculty members, and for optional small group meetings. Or, you can use that time for solitary writing or reflection.
- Wellness sessions will be held throughout the retreat.
- Evening gatherings include readings, movies and wellness/mindfulness sessions.
Taos is about three hours north of Albuquerque. Take I-25 north, to Santa Fe. From the north side of town, get on Hwy. 285, passing through Espanola on Hwy. 68. When you get to Kit Carson Road, turn right, then left on Morada Lane. You’ll find the Luhan House at the end of the road.
Twin Hearts shuttle service provides transportation from Albuquerque to Taos. For information, call 575-751-1201.
Check-in starts at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
A very informal wine-and-cheese gathering takes place about 5 p.m., and dinner will be served in the adjacent dining room at 6 o’clock. At 7:30, we gather in the classroom for a brief orientation followed by the evening gathering. Dress is always casual, which means you should wear whatever you like. Shorts, jeans, tee-shirts are fine. Comfort rules. Bolo ties are optional.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served family-style in the Luhan House dining room, and each meal includes vegetarian options. Mabel Dodge Luhan House takes pride in providing delicious, inventive, healthy food. Please let us know if you have particular dietary needs.
There are no phone connections in the rooms at the Luhan House. The main house has a phone you can use for local and credit card calls. During working hours, a staff member usually can take incoming messages.
Wi-fi is available only in the lobby of the Luhan House.
You’ll likely want or need to print some of your writing during your stay, and a printer will be available for your use. Printing options include: working on the retreat laptop and printing directly from there, hooking your laptop up to our printer or using a flash drive with our laptop/printer. We strongly suggest bringing a laptop for your own writing, and a flash drive for printing.
You do not need a computer for the morning classroom sessions, since using pen and paper is strongly encouraged.
Our last full session is Friday evening. It ends late, so please plan to stay through Friday night if at all possible. Saturday breakfast is served. Check out time is posted, usually 10:00 a.m.
