The vitality and reputation of the School of Medicine depend on the contributions and achievements of our faculty in the principal areas of academic endeavor, namely,
Many faculty excel in at least one of these areas and academic promotion requires demonstrated excellence in at least two areas. Faculty who have demonstrated excellence in three areas warrant special recognition. The Regents’ Professor and Regents’ Lectureship awards provide an opportunity to recognize the outstanding efforts of such individuals.
Every three years, the School of Medicine awards two Regents’ Professor and four Regent’s Lecturer Awards. One Professor and two Lecturers are awarded in each of the tenure- and clinical educator tracks. The Regents’ Professor award consists of an $8,300 salary bonus annually for three years that can be saved or paid as Incentive. In addition, the recipients receive a plaque and the title of Regents’ Professor. The awardee retains the title as long as they are active faculty at UNM. The Regents’ Lecturer award consists of a $2,900 salary bonus annually for three years that can be saved or paid as Incentive. In addition, the recipients receive a plaque and the title of Regents’ Lecturer.
Department Chairs, Division Chiefs, and Assistant or Associate Deans can nominate full-time Associate or Full Professors for a Regents’ Professor Award and full-time Assistant Professors for a Regent Lecturer Award. Nomination packets should consist of a nomination letter stylized in a fashion similar to faculty promotion letters, providing evidence of the nominee’s excellence in three areas of academic endeavor, along with a copy of the nominee’s curriculum vitae. Additional letters of support are not required, but up to three letters can be provided to substantiate the nominator’s letter.
