Carl Cords, PhD

Carl Cords

Microbiology

Carl E. "Bill" Cords, Jr., obtained his BS degree from Arizona State University, and then completed his PhD at the University of Washington in Microbiology. He moved to Albuquerque with his wife, Nancy, in September 1964. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine under the direction of Leroy McClaren, the founding chair of the newly formed Department of Microbiology.

Carl was soon appointed to the faculty of the Department of Microbiology, a position he retained until his retirement 30 years later.

Carl was a member of both the American Association of Virology and the American Association of Microbiology. He and his best friend, Dr. Thomas Baker (also a faculty member in the Department of Microbiology), were avid golfers and University of New Mexico Lobo fans.

Dr. Cords died June 12, 2001, at the age of 68 after a long illness with cancer.

Remembrances

From Larry Hooser

I graduated with Carl at ASU in 1959, took Micro classes with him & became his friend. I was shocked to learn of his passing so many years ago. I'm sorry that I've waited so very long before making this inquiry. Carl was a credit to the advancement in the fields of Virology and Microbiology.
