Donald Pinkerton

1930-2010

Pediatrics

Donald Pinkerton, MD, played an important role in the pediatric community of Albuquerque and New Mexico for almost 30 years. After graduating from medical school at Baylor University, he served a pediatric internship and residency at the Bernalillo County Medical Center 1968-70 and a hematology fellowship at UNM Affiliated Hospitals 1970-71. He joined Lovelace Medical Center in 1971 and enjoyed a successful pediatric career there for 20 years. During his time at Lovelace, he became Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UNM, then Adjunct Associate Professor.

Following his retirement from Lovelace in 1991, Don was appointed Associate Professor of Pediatrics by letter of academic title and maintained that appointment through 1999. He played a critical role in maintaining the Pediatric Oncology program at a time it was seriously understaffed. He was a compassionate, caring, efficient and effective clinician and teacher and was the recipient of the People’s Caring Award from a New Mexico Cancer group. Don died at the age of 80 in 2010.
