Orientations

Teacher & Educational Development plays an integral role in the orientation of new students and faculty, providing orientees with a grounding in the history and model of education at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and an opportunity to develop and refine skills and identify resources.

New Faculty Orientations (Quick Start)

Orientation for new faculty ("Quick Start") is generally conducted four times a year through the Office of Academic Affairs. As part of the orientation process, Teacher & Educational Development co-facilitates an interactive seminar on "Education at UNM SOM".

The objectives for this session are that participants will be able to:

  • Reflect on how the new paradigm of teaching relates to their own teaching philosophy and practices
  • Describe and reflect on characteristics of effective teaching
  • Explain how the history of UNM SOM has shaped our current context
  • Provide a broad overview of the UNM SOM undergraduate medical education curriculum
  • Identify teaching opportunities available to them
  • Identify resources available to support their professional development in education and develop an action plan for ongoing development
